Activity 1: The More, the Merrier?
In the 1800s, most families were pretty big. In fact, many parents had an average of seven to nine children. Imagine that you were a child in the 1800s and you had nine siblings.
On your blog, please tell us how you would feel. Would you enjoy being a member of such a large family? Why or why not?
If I were in such a big family I wouldn't have a very bright spirit. There would be lots of people that need to eat and the slow people miss out. it would take ages to get to school and everybody would always be late. It would be a long time before I would get to do something.
Activity 2: Acknowledging Ancestry
All of us are members of a family. Some of us have large families and some of us have very small
families. When I have the opportunity to talk about my family and my ancestry I sometimes choose to use
a pepeha. It is a very special way of identifying who I am and where I come from. There are many
different versions of pepeha but most provide people with information about who you are and where you
come from (i.e. your whakapapa). Use the template provided below to prepare your own unique pepeha.

Hi there Thomas, my name is Billy and I am from the Summer Learning Journey programme.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on completing another set of activities. It's great that you are blogging during your holidays.
Thank you for your honest opinion about whether or not you would enjoy being apart of a big family. I think you have some very good points. There wouldn't be much food to go around, I don't think you would have your own bedroom, you would struggle to find some peace and quiet.
Can you think of any positives that having a big family might bring? What about if you wanted to play a game of something, you would always have enough players.
Thank you for also sharing your Pepeha with us. It's cool to see that you've managed to include a lot of information too. I like how you've written the translation in English next to the Pepeha in Te Reo. That means more people can understand your family's history.
Keep up the great blogging.
Billy
