Hominin evolution is a lengthy process studied by paleontologists that shows the evolutionary change from ape to human. The ability to walk on two legs started to evolve over 4 million years ago as well as other important human characteristics like a large and complex brain, the capacity for language, and the ability to make and use weapons and tools. Most scientists recognize 15 to 20 fossils as early humans but since it clashes with the religious belief of creation it is not recognized by all scientists. Paleontology looks at the evidence provided by naturally buried and preserved fossils to understand their lifestyle and how they moved around. The way evolution occurs is due to passing on DNA that is better adapted to survival however sometimes the better ability to survive starts by the DNA changing by means of mutation. Species refers to a group of adults in a group that can breed and produce fertile offspring that can also produce offspring.
