Takahia

LO: Learn the Maori launguage.
In class we learnt game called Takahia, it's pretty much a Maori chant with actions. This game is to teach us the Maori launguage. It is sort of a haka but its still a game.

The words are:
Takahia paki te piti piti paki ke te pao pao paki te piti piti paki hei
Takahia paki te piti piti paki ke te whiu whiu paki te piti piti paki hei
Takahia paki te piti piti paki ke te taha paki te piti piti paki hei
Takahia paki te piti piti paki ke te tu paki te piti piti paki hei
Takahia paki te piti piti paki ke te kapo kapo paki te piti piti paki hei
Takahia paki te piti piti paki ke te kaiwaka paki te piti piti paki hei

Notice that we changed one word and everything else stayed the same. it has been played many times in our class so we knew it

The Lorax

On a cold rainy morning the year 7 cohort watched a movie called The Lorax By Dr Seuss. We watched it because it is part of our new kete which is about sustainability.

The big idea of the movie is to teach us that one person can make a big difference. Also it tells us that if something goes wrong someone else can fix it. Like when the Once-ler cut down all the trees, Ted planted another one with the last seed. The movie is meant to tell us various things. Another big idea is not to pollute stuff or you may regret it for a long time.

The author of this movie wants you to think about what you do before you do it. They want you to think about the fact that actions have consequences. Also that what you do can change the future. One small seed can create something big, like a tree.

Some of the key concepts I think are in the movie are. Environmentalism, pollution, social responsibility, sustainability, the lorax, trees and choices. I think these are all in the movie because the movie has these certain things in them.

All the creatures in the film

This links to my life in a way by the fact I do bad stuff the the environment. When I do it is stuff like accidentally letting my rubbish blow away and not go to get it. Or pull out plants or weeds and leave them on the ground.

exploding coke
aim: to see if  coke explodes when as mentos lolly b is dropped into it using different temperatures and different kinds of coke.

Hypotosus:
The coke will explode and it will go over 10 cm.

Equipment:

Ruler
Beaker
Thermometer
Coke Mentos
Measuring flask

Method:
Task 1:

Task 2:
  1. heat up 150ml in a beaker of coke(using a thermometer to heat it to 15 degrees).
  2. place the beaker in the sink and add mentos.

Findings:
6 Mentos lollies were dropped into a bottle of coke. the height of the fountain of coke was measured in centimetres.
A Mentos was crushed and dropped into the coke. This showed no result.

Liquid
Height
Coke
48c m

The Scientific Method

Aim: to compare the boiling point of tap water and salt water

Hypothesis: I think salt water will be higher because the salt might give ti a boost

Equipment:
150 mls of tap water
2 teaspoons of salt
2 beakers with water
Bunsen burner
Bunsen burner tripod
heat resistant mat
gauze mat
thermometer

Method:

  1. collect equipment
  2. attach bunsen burner to a gas tap
  3. fill two beakers with water
  4. add salt to one beaker and mix
  5. place the beaker with tap water on the tripod
  6. place bunsen burner on the heat mat under neath
  7. light the bunsen burner and adjust the flame to blue
  8. as it heats up place the thermometer in the beaker of water until it is boiling
  9. record results on blog
  10. repeat the process with salt water
findings:

Tap water: The tap water boiled at 100 degrees.

Salt water: The salt water boiled at 99 degrees.
So the tap water boiled higher.

Orana wildlife park

On Monday the 7th of August the year 7's and 8's went to Orana Wildlife Park. At Orana there were lots of animals including rhinos, zebras, lions, tigers, Tasmanian devils and geckos. We were mostly looking at endangered animals and talking about what made them endangered. We used H.I.P.P.O which stands for Habitat loss, Introductions, Population growth, Pollution and Overexploitation. It was a lot of fun, there were sooo many things to look at. We started of by eating morning tea then we went down to see the cheaters. After the cheaters we saw the
