Summer Learning Journey day 3

Unfortunately, the wealth and success of the 1920s did not continue into the 1930s. Instead, the stock market in America crashed on Tuesday 29 October 1929. When this happened, people lost a lot of money and much of the world sunk into a deep, financial depression. The 1930s is often referred to as the ‘Great Depression.’

Activity 1: Dealing with Stress

In New Zealand, many people lost their jobs during this decade. Experts predict that as much as 30% of the population was unemployed. It was a very stressful time for families.

Sadly, many of us still experience stress in our lives to this day. When I feel stressed I try to go for a walk or pop into my local gym for a quick workout. Exercise makes me feel better. What about you?

I like to read a book or watch videos on my computer.

On your blog, please tell us what you do when you want to relax or de-stress. Do you read a favourite book, watch a favourite television show or talk to someone special?  What are your tips for dealing with stress?

When I want to relax I lie on the floor or on the couch and read a book or watch YouTube and netflix on my computer. If I want to relax on a hot day I eat an icecream as well.

Activity 2: Offering a Helping Hand

During this period, people struggled to find work both here at home and overseas. It was a really tough time for people living in the Great Plains of the United States because they were hit with a huge drought that lasted for most of the decade. Many crops were damaged and farmers were not able to make enough money to feed their families.

Imagine that you were alive in the 1930s. What could you have done to help these families? On your blog, list three different ways that you could raise funds for families to help them buy food and clothing. Be as creative as you can with your fundraising ideas!

  • Lemonade stand.
  • Sell baked goods.
  • Garage sale.

  1. Hi there Thomas

Jade F here from the Summer Learning Journey! Well done on completing another set of activities. I like how you mentioned in your first activities that you deal with stress with netflix and reading. Those are a couple of the things that I do as well. Ice cream seems like a great idea on a hot day when you’re feeling stressed and overheated from the sun. What kind of books do you like to read when your stressed? I like to read magazines or comic books, it’s rather relaxing on a warm day.

With activity two, you’ve come up with some pretty good fundraising ideas. Garage sales usually raise a lot of money because you find all kinds of knick knacks and lost treasures in there! A lemonade stand and bake sale would raise a bit of money as well, because who doesn’t like drinking lemonade and eating home baked cookies or muffins? I’ve participated in a few bake sale and I couldn’t help but buy some stuff of my own because everything looked too delicious! Have you ever been part of fundraiser before?

I looking forward to hearing from you and keep up the awesome blog posts!

    Jade F :)

  2. Hey Thomas,

It's Jade C from the Summer Learning Journey team 2018! I will be reading your blog posts along with other SLJ bloggers in New Zealand! It's great to see that you have been active with your blogging and I hope to read more of your blogs :)

I also like to watch videos on my computer with some sweet treats. That's my ideal way to relax and de-stress. My little sister loves reading, apparently she bought three Hunger Games books today at the market held in Waiheke. I think she will be busy this week reading those three books in her bed!

I really like your ideas for fundraising, such as the lemonade stand and garage sale! Perhaps you could've explained a little bit more in detail :) For me, I would raise money by car wash and I would clean my own car there as well.

I hope to read more of your blog posts,

    Jade C.
