Summer Learning Journey day 5

Activity 1: Hiking Tongariro

In 1990, one of the largest national parks in New Zealand, Tongariro, was listed as a World Heritage Site. It is a truly spectacular place to visit! Thousands of people go to Tongariro every year and hike the Tongariro Crossing. Visit the Tongariro website to learn more about the one-day hike.

On your blog tell us what you would need to pack if you were going to hike the Tongariro Crossing. What should you bring with you? Write a list of at least 5 items.

Other than making sure that you have the right equipment, what else should you do before heading out on a big hike? Click here to learn how to stay safe while you’re hiking.
  1. Lots of food.
  2. Lots of water.
  3. Good shoes.
  4. Something to sit on while you have a break.
  5. Plus something that's important patience.

  1. Plan your trip: Seek local knowledge and plan the route you will take and the amount of time you can reasonably expect it to take.
  2. Tell someone: Tell someone your plans and leave a date to raise the alarm if you haven’t returned.Telling somebody is about the Outdoors Intentions process (external si: : the way that visitors leave information with others about their intended trip into the outdoors and return time.
  3. Be aware of the weather: New Zealand’s weather can be highly changeable. Check the forecast and expect weather changes. As well being aware of the weather you need be avalanche alert as they can occur in any season. You need to understand the risks before you visit avalanche-prone country.
  4. Know your limits: Challenge yourself within your physical limits and experience.
  5. Take sufficient supplies: Make sure you have enough food, clothing, equipment and emergency rations for the worst-case scenario. Take an appropriate means of communication.

  1. Hi there Thomas,

Awesome job on your blog post. I thought your list of things to bring on a hike would definitely be essential on any hiking trip! Especially food and water and good proper hiking shoes. Couldn't hike in jandals!

I also liked that you included a list of things to do before you go on your trip. You are so right that it is very important to plan it wisely and you know where is safe to go on your trip!

Have you been hiking before? If not, would you like to go on a hiking trip one day with friends or family? I've never been hiking before but I would like to do the Tongariro crossing one day!

looking forward to hear from you soon and keep up the awesome blog posts!

    Cheers,
    Jade F :)

  2. Hey Thomas,

It's Jade C from the Summer Learning Journey 2018, I will be reading your blog along with Jade F, Hazel, Rachel, and many other bloggers! I look forward to reading more of your blog posts.

First of all, well done for your amazing work today Thomas! It's good to see that you have thoroughly read the questions and went to the links with information related to today's activity.

Yes, we do need to bring food and water, they are the basic and the most essential things that you need to survive! Good shoes and warm clothes would come next as they will take care of your body temperature and give you comfort. If you have uncomfortable shoes, you will not be able to walk for a long time. All the other extra things you've put in your list are all very important and they are all useful in different situations! Well done :)

Thank you for sharing the list of things to do before heading out on a big hike. Things like planning the trip is very crucial as you need to be prepared and know your route. New Zealand weather can be very unpredictable and changeable. Therefore, you will need to warm clothes such as a jacket to wear when it gets cold.

Have you ever go hiking on a mountain? The longest hike that I've done was 3~4 hours hike -which is nothing compared to Tongariro mountain hiking.

I enjoyed reading your blog post, I hope to come back and read more.

    Cheers,
    Jade C.
