Write That Essay - The -ED start & the W- start

The -ED start is when you start a sentence with a word ending with the suffix -ed.

Example -ED words:

  • Confused
  • Surprised
  • Startled
  • Confronted
  • Triped
  • Thrilled
  • excited
Example sentences:
  • Confused by this sudden turn of events, the boy fell off his bike, sending him skidding across the pavement.
  • Surprised by a barking dog, the cat missed the fence it was going to jump on.

The W- start is when you start a sentence with a word beginning with w-.

Example W- words:
  • Who
  • What
  • When
  • Where
  • Whereas
  • Whilst
  • While
Example sentences:
  • Why the boy fell off his bike, nobody knows.
  • When the door opened, I was surprised to find a bundle of flowers.

Now for a paragraph with the W- start, the -ly start, the -ed start and a preposition start.

Whilst people were doing their work, Rykin talked like there was no tomorrow. Annoyed by his constant talking, people stuffed their ears full of cheese. Unfortunately he didn't shut up, so people threw cheese at him till he ran away. After he was gone, people could get their work done.
